Filton College Pilots New ITV West Scholarship

A new scholarship scheme aimed at providing greater opportunity for young people in the media industry, was launched in November 2005 by Filton College and ITV West with the announcement of the first two student placements.

The two youngsters who will be getting hands-on experience at the Bath Road, Bristol studios of ITV West will be Joshua Muzaffer (age 17) and Lashana Keen (age 18). The judging panel included the creators of the Award scheme, JANE McCLOSKEY (ITV WEST Director of Programmes); and ADAM FRESCO (ITV WEST Television Workshop Leader) - who were so impressed by the quality of entries that they have offered a bespoke Work Experience placement to a third Filton student Jenna Richards (also 18).

ITV West Director of Programmes Jane McCloskey, said: "We've been developing a relationship with Filton College for the past few years, and I'm delighted we're cementing that by offering placements to such talented students. Their passion for film and television really shone through, and I have no doubt they'll continue to flourish and build strong careers in the industry."

During their placement at ITV West, the three students will be working on projects in regional programmes and with the Television Workshop, which focuses on drama.

Educational partner of ITV West

The new scholarship scheme is being piloted by Filton College who are the educational partner of the ITV West Scheme, and is open exclusively to Filton College students interested in a career in the media.

The new ITV WEST SCHOLARSHIP AT FILTON COLLEGE is designed to offer an opportunity to young people who wish to pursue a career within the media industry. The scheme will foster individual talent and help develop vocational skills and 'employability'.

Adam Fresco, ITV West's Television Workshop Leader explained: "We are very excited by and committed to this project which we believe will be of immense benefit to students in preparing them for the real demands of the modern media workplace and enable educators at Filton to work closely with media professionals at ITV West."

The scheme provides participating students with real and 'simulated' work placement opportunities with ITV West, master classes and 'guided briefs' to develop the talent of the individual, and to assist their employability.

Adam Ranson, Head of Filton College's Bristol Academy of Media Arts (BAMA) explained: "The ITV WEST SCHOLARSHIP AT FILTON COLLEGE will offer a fantastic opportunity to young people who wish to pursue a career in the media. However good our teaching is, nothing can replace real work experience. This scheme will allow our students to 'network' with media professionals and to understand the ethos and the day-to-day pressures of the TV world. The scheme fosters individual talent and helps develop vocational skills and employability."

After this initial pilot scheme the scholarships will be advertised annually. In January, ITV West will invite applications from Filton College students who wish to access the scholarship arrangement.

As part of the project professional practitioners from ITV West, such as Director of Programmes Jane McCloskey, will provide Masterclasses for Filton College students to inform and encourage their applications to the Scheme.

Scholarships will be available to Filton College first year students in exceptional circumstances, with second year students benefiting most from the scheme. Scholarships will be valid for a maximum of one year.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Joshua, Lashana and Jenna. The scheme has been created by ITV West at Filton College to identify talent at an early stage and provide invaluable experience and exposure to the world of television broadcasting. The initiative illustrates the innovative way in which employers and colleges can work together to provide actual work experience opportunities. The scheme will give real insight into the broadcasting industry and it is hoped that it will provide an invaluable launch-pad to employment for our students in a very competitive sector" said Kevin Hamblin, Principal of Filton College
